Beginning the New Year with Intention and Trust in Allah

ROYA LIBAAS

Although we as Muslims do not celebrate the New Year as a religious occasion since our true calendar is the Hijri calendar - we still acknowledge the beginning of a new year, as we live in this era and do not take it for granted.

Not every new year needs significant change to be meaningful. In Islam, real renewal begins quietly: with intention (niyyah) and sincere duʿā. Before focusing on achievements, we pause and reflect: Who do I want to be in the sight of Allah?

Intention (Niyyah)

The Prophet ﷺ taught us: “Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will have what they intended.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

A small act, done sincerely for Allah, can hold immense value. Beginning the year with clear intentions transforms pressure into purpose. Instead of chasing idealism, we pursue sincerity - being present in our prayers, our character, and our daily responsibilities.

Intentions guide us, reminding us that growth is not always about doing more, but about doing what we already do with greater awareness of Allah.

Supplication (Duʿā)

Duʿā is more than a request - it is worship: an ongoing and intimate conversation with our Creator. Through duʿā, hearts return to Allah - hopes are whispered, fears are released, and trust is renewed. In this sacred space, we acknowledge our dependence on Him and hold onto His promise:

“Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” (Qur’an 40:60)

As we begin a new year, we ground ourselves in supplication, recognising that true success, inner peace, and lasting barakah come from Allah alone. We ask Him to place barakah in our time, guidance in our decisions, and patience in our trials - trusting that every moment placed in His care is never wasted.

Trusting Allah’s Plan

Trusting in Allah’s plan requires surrendering our limited understanding to His infinite wisdom. We may carefully map out our lives, yet Allah reminds us that His plan is always greater, kinder, and more precise than our own:

“But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.” (Qur’an 8:30)

What feels delayed is often divine protection, and what feels like loss may be gentle redirection. Allah’s timing is never random - it is intentional, perfectly aligned with what our hearts need and what our souls are meant to become. When we place our trust in Him, even uncertainty becomes a source of peace, because we know that every outcome unfolds under the care of a Lord who sees what we cannot and wills what is best.

وما بيننا حُبٌّ، وحُبُّك أنت

A small dua for the new year :
O Allah, let what remains between us be nothing but love - love for You, love through You, and love that draws us closer to You. Place Your love firmly in our hearts, and let it guide our intentions, purify our actions, and soften our souls. When we feel distant, pull us back with Your mercy; when we feel weak, strengthen us with remembrance of You. Make Your love greater to us than anything we seek, so that in loving You, we find peace, purpose, and nearness to all that is good. Ameen.
